Chiang Saen National Museum
In the past, Chiang Saen is one of the most important cities of Lanna. It used to be called “Wiang Hiran Nakhon Ngoen Yang”. King Meng Rai's nephew, King Saen Phu, had constructed this city in order to control other major cities in Yonok and to contact with other cities near Khong River. There are many historical evidences found in the city which is why Chiang Saen National Museum is created in order to store those precious items and recount the history of their ancestors to the next generation.
This museum was established in 1957. Four years later, it was chosen and announced to be the national museum. It has been 60 years since the museum collects and stores these archeological antiques filled with histories of Chiang Saen and nearby cities such as Lanna stucco, Buddha image, stone inscription from Chiang Saen and Phayao province, the Thai Ya, Thai Lu and many hill tribes’ unique artifacts that range from lacquer wares to beautiful ornament and musical instrument. In addition, there are several historical exhibitions such as the settlement of Lanna and the establishment of Chiang Saen. The exhibitions are divided into 3 parts. Nowadays, it is one of the most ancient museums in the northern part. The museum is open to the public and students for educational purpose. It is the perfect place for people who love Lanna history and its art merging Thai and Myanmar cultures together offering interesting aspects. The museum is open Wed-Sun from 08.30-16.30. It is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and public holidays. The entrance fees: 10 baht for Thai visitors, 30 baht for foreigners. Slide shows, teaching equipment and souvenir shops are available.
