Doi Mae Salong
Doi Mae Salong is one of the renowned mountain peaks in Chiang Rai. It is located in Mae Salong Nok subdistrict, Mae Fah Luang district. With a comfortable temperature all year round, the main source of income is Oolong tea plantations. Santikhiri Village on the mountain peak was predominately populated with a community of Chinese immigrants since 1961. Nowadays, it is home to many hill tribes. Highlights of Doi Mae Salong include its splendid natural beauty, cold breeze, authentic tribal culture and remarkable tourist attractions.
It is best to visit this mountain peak in winter from December to February. Tourists can indulge themselves in a nice and comfortable temperature, admire the picturesque sea of fog and sip a cup of warm tea in a meantime. Moreover, tourists can wander around tea plantations and greet hill tribe people in their colorful costumes festooned with distinctive silver adornments. There are pinkish Wild Himalayan Cherry flowers, so-called Thailand’s Sakura, blooming all over the mountain.
Main attractions feature verdant tea plantations on terraced slopes where tea samples and tea making demonstrations are provided. Amongst these tea plantations, the most famous ones are Rai 101 (near Khum Nai Phol) and Rai Wang Put Tan.
General Tuan Cemetery is located on the hill just above the village. Go down the street beside Khum Nai Phol Resort for 1 kilometer. This elaborately decorated cemetery is a great scenic point where visitors can learn more about the past and overlook the whole mountain covered with Wild Himalayan Cherry flowers.
Chinese Martyrs' Memorial Museum is open daily from 8.00 – 17.00. The admission fee is 30 baht. Call 0 5376 5170 and 0 5376 5180.
The most recent activity to do is horse riding around Jiang Ja Sai village.
Another scenic point to visit is Phra Boromathat Chedi Srinagarindra Sathit Maha Santikhiri (the relic stupa in honour of the late Princess Mother) which stands 4 kilometers north of Santikhiri Village. There is an asphalt road leading there directly, but it quite meanders though.  This is the highest spot on Doi Mae Salong where tourists can enjoy panoramic views and watch the sunset.
An access to Doi Mae Salong is very easy owing to the asphalt road.  Drive along the Chiang Rai –Mae Chan route for 28 kilometers. At 1 kilometer away from Mae Chan district, turn left and keep going for 23 kilometers until you pass Pha Duea Village which is a scenic point and a handicraft market. Then from Ekaw T-junction, go straight for 10 kilometers to Doi Mae Salong. The whole distance from Chiang Rai is approximately 64 kilometers. There is a 45-kilometer-long road connecting Doi Mae Salong to Ban Tha Ton village, Fang district, Chiang Mai province.
Alternatively, tourists can find bus services running from downtown Chiang Rai. Then catch a minibus at the entrance to Doi Mae Salong, call 08 1024 0813. (Bus fares - 50 baht for an individual; 400 baht to hire a bus for a single trip; 800 baht for a round trip)
