Thi Lor Su Waterfall

Thi Lor Su, meaning a black or a great waterfall in Karen language, is situated in Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary and only 1.5 kilometer from the wildlife sanctuary office. Running down the huge limestone cliff, the waterfall is about 900 meters above sea level. Originated from a stream known as Huay Yok Lor, the waterfall width is 500 meters and cascades the descending steps for more than 300 meters, creating the loud noise which gives it the name of Thi Lor Su or the great waterfall. Surrounded by fertile rain forest, Thi Lor Su is the greatest and the most stunning waterfall in Thailand. However, the walk up each level of the waterfall requires special caution.
The route to Thi Lor Su Waterfall is closed during rainy season because it can be hazardous and is also a mating season for animals. If visitors need to visit Thi Lor Su Waterfall during that season, a permission and a  license need to be obtained from the wildlife sanctuary authority and a local guide should be hired. There are 2 ways to get there. The first one, taking 3 hours, is to raft along Mae Klong River from Tha Sai and walk for 10 kilometers which as well taker 3 hours. Another way is to walk from Huay Nhong Luang Wildlife Reserve Unit for about 25 kilometers, taking 4-5 hours.
Visitors can hire a local rafting agency in Amphoe Umphang. For more information please call Tourism Authority of Thailand, Tak province, at  +66 5551 4341-1 or Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary at +66 5557 7318.
