Catagorize: Floating Market

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is located in Ratchaburi province neighboring to Samut Sakhon Province and Samut Songkhram Province. This floating market is open from 05.00-12.00 offering various food, wares and souvenirs including handicraft products. It is a very popular destination among foreign tourists.

Damnoenssaduak was actually the name given by King Rama V dug by men; it is the longest and straightest canal in Thailand. Following the order of King Rama IV, the canal was dug to connect the Taachin and Maklong River together for the purpose of important trades and transportation route. It took approximately 2 years to construct Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from the reign of King Rama IV to King Rama V’s. The canal is 32 kilometers long with other small 200 canals nearby. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is also called Klong Ton Kem by the local people. About 30 years ago, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market used to be situated at Lad Plee located at the opposite side of the present floating market (Damnoen Saduak Floating Market’s side).  There are boat vendors from farmers floating by. Visitors can cross the canal by walking on these boats. In 1971-1973, the trading at Lad Plee market was so successful among foreign tourists that some investors tried to dig the similar canal to connect between Lad Plee Floating Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. However, it was not as popular as the original one. The Lad Plee floating market had been closed (over 20 years); the present floating market is only the imitation of the original one. Nevertheless, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market with over hundred years of history is still standing and presenting several fruit products from farms or other suppliers delivered by trucks. It is a must see touristic destination.

Around this area, boat trip services are available for sightseeing along Damnoen Saduak Floating Market; 300 baht for row boats and 600 baht for long-tailed boat with 8 persons ride. The sightseeing includes farming and palm juice making; the trip takes about 45 minutes. For more information, please contact Tourist Information Center in Damnoen Saduak district which is 1 kilometers away from Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Elephant ride services are available to travel around Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. Police station is open to tourists for any helps regarding the language or the price checking.
