Wat Khao Khun Phanom is an important temple in both historical and archeological aspects. There is a cave with brick-and-clay wall and a stone boundary marker, just like that of the city wall. The front side of the cave has patterns of stucco decorated with chinaware. It was assumed that the King of Thonburi (Taksin) used to reside here. Some said it was instead a residence of Princess Kesinee, daughter of Chao Nara Suriyawong, from 1769-1776.
Khao Khun Phanom People believed that King Taksin Maha Rat used to stay at Khao Khun Phanom, so they teamed up to build Somdej Phra Chao Taksin Maha Rat Palace at a shelf at the foot of the hill, where they believed the King resided during his monkhood. People remembered his bravery and heroism that restored dependence to Ayutthaya at the second Burmese occupation. Together, they had his portraits created both in monk and the warrior clothing. The portraits were placed in a shrine where believers can come pay respect. Nowadays, people from all places visit Khao Khun Phanom on track of King Taksin the Great.
Khao Khun Phanom Scientific Study Centre is located on the way up to Khao Khun Phanom. Here, people can come to learn about science technology, environment and ecotourism. Visitors to Khao Khun Phanom community can join training camp and cycling activity around orchards. There is also a tourism club for those who are keen on learning and travelling.
