Nearby Phra Tamnak Kwan Phayao, visitors may take advantage of the opportunity to explore the Phayao Freshwater Fishery Station as well, the first facility in the world to successfully breed the giant catfish, is key to the survival of Thailand’s most revered fish. The Mekong Giant Catfish, or Pla Buk, is the world’s most massive freshwater fish, weighing up a staggering 300 kilograms; it has during the past decade dwindled to critically endangered status. Silver carp and rohu are also bred here, with an aim of distributing the valuable fish to local farmers.
A museum nearby exhibits a variety of rare and exotic fish. Activities abound: petanque competitions, tours and restaurants will fill a visitor’s afternoon beautifully. A relaxation zone and restaurants with fresh-caught fish from the nearby Kwan Phayao are also on site.
The facility is easily found on Highway No. 1 in Phayao town.
