The largest mailbox in Thailand is located at Betong district, in the city, around the Sukyang road corner. The former mailbox is on the corner of Sukyang road around the clock tower junction in the center of Betong city. It was built in 1924 A.D., before World War II, by Mister Sanguan Jirajinda, the mayor of Betong back then and he was a former postman before the election.
The mailbox is in a tube shape, the material is a concrete with metal structure inside. The circumference of this mailbox is 140 centimeters and it is 290 centimeters high. If start from the base it is 320 centimeters high. It is about 80 years old till now.
The purpose of creating this mailbox is to be the center of information in Betong. There is an intercom radio on top of the mailbox, and also used as a mailbox since.
Nowadays there is a new mailbox which is bigger at the community hall, Sukyang road. It is 9 meters tall and is now a highlight in Betong, for visitors to take pictures with.
In the past, transportation and communication between Betong and other districts was really difficult. Communication via mail was one of the most comfortable ways in Betong. In present, this mailbox is a symbol of Betong’s communication. The authorities thus decided to duplicate the old mailbox and build it 3.5 times bigger. It is not just a decoration though, because it is also functional.
When visitors visit Betong, it is recommended that visitors must see the marvel of “The Largest Mailbox in Thailand”. The new mailbox also comes with an intercom radio on top of it, just like the original one. Therefore, this mailbox is the most functional and attractive tourist attraction in Thailand.
