Contact: Tat Thong Sub-district, Mueang District, Yasothon Province 35000 Tel. -

It is located in the field in Tat Thong Sub-district, approximately 9 kilometers from the city center. Take the highway number 23 (Yasothon- Ubon Ratchathani) and turn left for 1 kilometer at the 194th kilometer marker.

Phra That Kong Khao Noi is an ancient chedi built during Khmer Empire in the 23rd- 25th Buddhist century or in the late Ayutthaya period. It is situated inside Wat Phra That Kong Khao Noi, which was formerly a field in Tat Thong Sub-district. Phra That Kong Khao Noi is a mortared chedi with strange-looking shape like a sticky rice container. This Phra That is a chedi with three indented corners. Its square basement is 2 meters wide in each side and is around 1 meter tall. The middle part of Phra That is designed and made into the arch in four sides. Next to this part is the top of the chedi, which is gradually tapering. The outside of the top of Phra That Kong Khao Noi is surrounded by brick wall in 5x5 meters size. Besides, there is a brick Buddha image behind Phra That, which people regard as a very sacred object. In the fifth lunar month, people usually sprinkle water onto the Buddha image and cover it with gold leaves. They believe that if they do not do that, there will be shortage of rain.

Phra That Kong Khao Noi has an interesting history which is different from the other sacred places that always involve in Buddhism. In contrast, the history of Phra That Kong Khao Noi is a story about a young farmer who has been working since early in the morning until lunchtime. Because his mother does not give his meal on time, he becomes very hungry and dizzy. His temporary mood makes him commit matricide just because his meal looks too little and might not be enough. But when he feels full, there are still some leftovers. He, then, regains his consciousness and feels remorseful that he killed his mother. As a result, he constructed Phra That Kong Khao Noi as a dedication to be forgiven and to expiate his sin for committing matricide.

In addition, in Ban Tat Thong, the Department of Fine Arts has operated the excavation to find out about pre-historical humans. They found human skeletons in the pre-historic era and some painted pottery vessels like those found in Ban Chiang.

That Kong Khao Noi, or frequently called Phra That Kong Khao Noi or Phra That Ban Thung Sadao, is an ancient chedi in Khmer style. Located in the field in Tat Thong Sub-district, Mueang District, Yasothon Province, Phra That Kong Khao Noi is approximately 9 kilometers from the city center of the province. The tourists can take the highway number 23 (Yasothon- Ubon Ratchathani). At the 194th kilometer marker, turn left and continue for 1 kilometer.

Moreover, the real name of this Phra That should be “That Kong Khao Noi” rather than “Phra That Kong Khao Noi” because what contains inside is the bones of normal people, not the Buddha’s relics like general Phra That or Phra Borom That.
